Associate (unpaid volunteer and internship positions)
Associate (unpaid volunteer and internship positions)
Third Horizon Earth (3HE) welcomes expressions of interest to join our team. 3HE Associates act as members of the team in finding, developing, and communicating innovative practice in the regenerative development field.
Associates engage in essential work on behalf of Third Horizon Earth, and in turn 3HE seeks to provide them with a meaningful, hands-on experience in the field, an opportunity to build their networks, and the chance to develop new skills and knowledge. They contribute to 3HE’s objectives, working within the current strategic framework, to fulfill a range of roles including research, communications, media development and production, community engagement, organizational development and marketing, stakeholder development, and more.
The definition of roles and specific programs of work will depend on the skills and inclinations of the candidate and 3HE’s needs at the time. 3HE seeks to ensure that associateships can be adapted to fit the work and academic demands of our associates – in the case of internships to work with formal program needs and in the case of volunteers to effectively engage the depth of experience you may bring to the role. Time commitment and intensity will vary depending on mutual needs, but in general we seek a commitment of between 5 and 20 hours per week.
In collaboration with 3HE management, guest curators, and peers, associates will engage in one or more of the following functions advancing 3HE’s mission:
- Research and Content Development – including identifying relevant events, resources, artwork, and contextualizing them for 3HE audiences. This may also include developing resources in a particular disciplinary area (e.g., agriculture, marketing, finance, etc.).
- Communications – Building 3HE’s social media and community communications through messaging and engagement strategies, production of social media content, video and audio.
- Information and Web Infrastructure Development -- website strategy, tool, and functionality development, information architecture and connectivity to serve audience needs.
- Organizational development – working on 3HE’s systems ranging from financial management and donor relations to performance frameworks and impact reporting.
Part of the training of our associates involves exposure to, and discussion on, what constitutes innovation in the context of regenerative development. It may include review of key works along with discussions to stay up to date and contribute effectively to 3HE’s evolving roles.
Associates may have duties involving public exposure and will be recognized on the Website as part of the 3HE team. You will also be asked to sign an intern / volunteer agreement acknowledging the conditions of the association.
All positions at 3HE require:
- An interest in regenerative development and the commitment to helping the pioneers in this emerging field to innovate, and share more effectively, what they have learned.
- A commitment to act in a nonpartisan capacity, incorporating a diversity of views in context, and advancing evidence-based approaches to emerging knowledge and practice.
- Ability to write and speak English, which is our working language. The ability to write and speak other languages is an asset but not required. We value different cultural and linguistic backgrounds and seek to integrate these as strengths and even potential community development opportunities.
- Self-motivation and ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Ability to procure and manage your own technology tools, and to work on websites, databases, presentations, and other programs as needed.
It is helpful to possess:
- Background and/or understanding in regenerative development, sustainable development, circular economy, deep ecology, and related concepts.
- Background and/or understanding of other disciplines that may be of interest, including the roles and functions of business, civil society, finance, government, and academia in diverse practice areas, from ecology and human development to systemic complexity, art and expression, financial instruments, etc.
- Knowledge or experience in how regenerative concepts are viewed and practiced in different cultural, regional, and disciplinary contexts.
About 3HE organization and workplace
Third Horizon Earth is a Swiss nonprofit association, whose operations and strategies are guided by an independent board of directors, and the daily management of an Executive Director, in a delegated management model.
3HE is a virtual workplace with an international team collaborating across time zones via electronic communications. Our philosophy is to provide a supportive environment for learning with supervision while allowing associates considerable autonomy in achieving 3HE’s objectives, and their personal goals . We expect to learn from associates as well: new approaches, ways of thinking, sources, and tools, and we’ll share our own. We try to create a space for associates to do real work with tangible outcomes.
We also seek a diverse contributor base from within and from outside of Third Horizon Earth. Diversity and a commitment to listening, learning and civil discourse is part of our culture. We strive for dignity and respect, equity, inclusion, and participation.
If you are passionate about creating a future of mutually enriching, synergistic human and natural systems, join us.
